Sunday morning classes are 9:45 a.m. every Sunday. We have many different classes that offer ways to grow in your spiritual life. Here are some examples of ongoing classes:
Covenant: Seminar style, with a different topic each month (Congregation House, Room B)
February 28: Dr. Anne Wills on Mormonism in America
March 7, 14, 21, 28 and April 4 and 11: Tony Abbott, Dana Professor Emeritus of English, will teach a class on Reynolds Price, one of North Carolina's most admired novelists. The class will look at Price's autobiographical books Clear Pictures and A Whole New Life, for statements of his faith and descriptions of his spirituality. The class will then look at his studies of the Gospels and the ethics of Jesus, particularly in Three Gospels and A Serious Way of Wondering. The study will conclude with a discusison of his short novel, Tongues of Angels.
Jubilee: A discussion class, which explores issues of ethics, peace and justice (Room 116)
February 28: Join with the Covenant class for the conclusion of the Mormonism in America study.
March 7: Religious ethics of food, led by Dr. Lynda Poland, Associate Professor of Religion at Davidson College.
March 14: Religious ethics of food.
Remainder of March will be our Lenten Study.
April 4: Easter
April and May: TBA
Maloney: A traditional Bible study. (parlor)
Women’s: A time for devotions and sharing (room 205)
Pines: A Bible study taught by the leaders of the Men’s Class (Living Room at the Pines)
Faith and Family: A class designed by families which combines topics of faith and family needs. (room 201) Various topics.
Mid-week and small group opportunities are offered at different times throughout the week and at different times of the year. Some groups are on-going, while others meet for a set period of time.
Disciple Bible Studies: Disciple I group, Becoming Disciples through Bible study. Participants read through 70% of the Bible in 34 weeks. Meets Tuesday evenings at 7 pm. The topic for the group will be Jesus in the Gospels. Contact Linda Steber to register.
Brindisi Men’s Bible Study: This small group Bible study meets Tuesday mornings at 8:00 a.m. in the parlor.
Beloved Community Book Group: This book group with our sister church, Davidson Presbyterian Church, meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:45 p.m.
Women's Book Club: Meets on Monday nights, once a month, at member's houses.
Room at the Table: Meets Wednesday evenings at 5:45 p.m for food, fellowship and worship.
Shalom Bible Study: Women's Bible study meeting Monday mornings at 9:30 in room 206. Childcare is provided. The current topic is The Beatitudes for Today, by James Howell.
Gathering Around the Word: This program provides an opportunity to discuss the lectionary scriptures with Rev. McGregor Simmons both before and after they are used in sermons. Meets Thursdays at 6:30 in the Parlor.
Church Retreats take place on different occasions throughout the year. This year's retreats include two options.
-Congregational Retreat 2010: New date for this home retreat, taking place in Davidson, is February 27.
-Women's Retreat 2010: This year's retreat will be Sept. 24, 25 and 26 in Montreat.
