Festival of Faith and the Arts

This is a bi-annual festival of music, drama, art, dance, with major speakers or performers.  Highlights of past arts festivals include: speakers Frederick Buechner, Dorris Betts, Kathleen Norris and Dr. Thomas Troeger; artist-in-residence Jane Horner; hymn festivals led by Kenneth Nafziger; dance workshop and service by Moving Liturgy; congregational hymn-writing contests; an art show by church members; film festivals; outdoor drama productions of medieval saint plays.

Children's Musical

Each year the children's choirs join together to perform a musical. In November 2004, the entire church came together with the children's choirs to produce the classic mystery play "Noyes Fludde." A mystery play, in case you were wondering, is one of three common types of Medieval vernacular dramas. DCPC is proud of its children's choirs and all who participated in this memorable event.

In recent years, DCPC children's choirs performed "Elijah, God's Faithful Prophet" in 2008 and "Paul and Co." in 2009. This year on May 5, we will be presenting our production of "Table for 5...Thousand."

Other arts activities

DCPC Exhibits: Visual Art

The beautiful, light-filled hallway of our new Congregation House gives us a natural space for an art gallery. Art is a means of celebrating the God-given gifts of creativity and inspiration, and a way to create a more interesting, engaging, and vibrant area within the Congregation House. Each month from September through May, there will be a new art exhibit by members and friends of the congregation. Some will be solo shows and some will be group shows. Children’s art will be featured in December.

Liturgical Dance

From time to time, liturgical dancers are called upon to interpret music or scripture for worship or other special events. Anyone interested in interpreting scripture and music through use of movement and dance is encouraged to register with the music office.

Church Band
Instrumentalists often supplement the hymns or provide accompaniment for anthems. The church band reherses on an ad hoc basis. People who play an instrument please contact the music director.

Dramatic Reading of Scripture
Scripture readings are often brought to life when dramatized or read in character. Good readers or those with a dramatic flair interested in interpreting scripture in a fresh setting. Please contact one of the pastors or the music director. Commitment is for a single event.

Davidson College Students

Our worship is always enhanced when students participate. Many members of our Tower Ringers and Chancel Choir are students and instrumentalists are always welcomed for preludes and anthem accompaniments.

Sight-singing Class
Adult sight-singing class enjoys practicing rhythms on percussion instruments. The class meest briefly during the summer and learns to sing by solfege, using Kodaly hand signs. Topics also covered include key signatures, meters, and rhythms.
