DCPC Youth: Upcoming Service Projects and Trips!

Hello Youth and Parents!

Greetings in Christ! We’ve got a lot of great service opportunities coming up, and so I’d like to pass along this information to you. This email contains info on:

·         Appalachia Service Project Trip Registration

·         Registration for 30 Hour Famine

·         Information on the “Davidson Service Board” (a new youth service corps in town)

Have a great weekend!

In Christ’s service,

Appalachia Service Project Trip Registration:

Registration is FINALLY open for the High School Summer Service Trip! We’re headed off to Kentucky this summer to work on construction projects with Appalachia Service Project. We’ll live in a base camp for a week in rural Appalachia while we build and repair houses for people in need.

Why should you consider going on this trip? You and I are invited into God’s actions of binding up what is broken, restoring what is run-down, and infusing new life into the way things have always been.  Jesus says, “See, I am making all things new.” There’s a special kind of joy that comes from getting your hands dirty, watching a house transform before your eyes within a day, and knowing that you changed the life of a family through hard work. We walk and work with Jesus the Carpenter when we lift up a hammer and put in drywall to make someone else’s life better.

And so, I invite you (yes, you!) to come on this trip to restore homes with Appalachia Service Project from July 1-7, 2012. If you’d like to know more about ASP, please take a moment to visit their website at www.asphome.org. Please turn in a $50 deposit to the Church Office (not Andrew’s mailbox or office) by March 1. Youth will not be listed as registered until the deposit is in. Youth who register late or after all slots are filled will be placed on a waitlist and informed if there is an opening. Scholarships are always available; please contact Andrew Scales (ascales@dcpc.org) if you’d like to discuss funding matters.

Review:

What: Appalachia Service Project

Where: Rural Kentucky work site with ASP (exact location pending)

When: July 1-7, 2012

Total cost per youth: $275

Openings available: 12 high school youth (ASP requires that youth be high school age because of the construction aspect of the work. For that reason, we are limiting our invitations to youth who have completed their freshman year of high school)

What’s needed now: Please turn in a $50 deposit in to the DCPC Church Office by March 1.

Registration for 30 Hour Famine

Registration for the 30 Hour Famine service project is up and running at DCPC! Every year, we join hundreds of youth in Charlotte for a two-day fast and learn about world hunger issues in deeply meaningful ways. We invite you to join us on March 24-25 (Saturday and Sunday) for an amazing weekend to grow as a youth group, and learn about the plight of suffering people.

Please download a registration form on the DCPC Website (www.dcpc.org/youth) and turn it in to the DCPC Church Office (not Andrew’s office/mailbox) with a check for $30 (payable to “Presbytery of Charlotte”) by Wednesday, February 29. You will not be able to attend if the deposit and form are not in by that point. This event also counts as a service project for our Confirmation class.

Davidson Service Board

My friend Brian Parker from Westminster Fellowship is helping put together a “Davidson Service Board” for youth. The purpose is to provide service opportunities through the Town of Davidson. Brian writes,

“This is a new opportunity for middle and high school students of diverse backgrounds to play a larger role in their community.  Together they will identify problems in the community and design and implement solutions to address those problems.

Please ask them to apply by Tuesday Feb 7.  We'll have our orientation day on Saturday February 11th from 9:00am to 3:30pm.  We'll have lots of fun activities, food, and workshops led by Mayor Woods and former Habitat for Humanity CEO Paul Leonard.”

Application forms and more information are available: click here for more information, and here for a sign-up sheet

This Week with DCPC Youth!

January 30-February 5, 2012

What’s in this email?

·         A brief letter from Andrew

·         Musicians Needed for Valentine’s Day Dinner on Feb. 12!

·         30 Hour Famine Registration

·         Massanetta and Montreat Summer Trips Registration Closing Feb. 3!

·         Youth Dinner Volunteer Link

·         Youth Covenant and Permission Forms, Youth Choir

Dear Youth and Parents,

Greetings in Christ! Last weekend, dozens of DCPC Youth were out at Montreat and Cataloochee, tearing up the slopes on skis and snowboards. It’s good to get away on a retreat, to listen to meaningful keynotes like Jennifer Fouse’s sermons, and to rocket down a mountain at blinding speeds. I hope that all of you who went— tired though you might be this Monday afternoon—have found a few moments to reconnect with God and friends.

Perhaps the bulked-up candy aisles at Target have tipped you off that Valentine’s Day is coming up in a few weeks. Everyone starts talking about “love”: on television commercials, on candy boxes, in cards that we give to one another. Well, the Youth Group at DCPC is also going to consider love over the next few weeks, but maybe not in the ways you’d expect.

This Sunday, we’re going to get together in the afternoon in the Youth Lounge to plan out our annual Valentine’s Day dinner for residents at the Pines. So many people from different walks of life have told me about what a special event this is. My understanding is that youth in our church put in a ton of time, energy, and creativity into welcoming guests from the Pines. Feeding people with delicious food, sharing musical talents for entertainment, taking time to hear our elders’ stories and share our own stories with them: these are acts of love that can go far deeper than a box of chocolates or a card for a sweetheart.

And so, please join me and our full Youth Council on Sunday, February 5, to plan out what this evening will look like. In light of the Super Bowl, we’ll meet from 12:30-2:30pm in the Congregation House instead of our usual 5-7pm time. Bring a bag lunch and your most creative ideas for the Valentine’s Day dinner!

Also, a quick note for parents: Cambria Nielsen has kindly put together an easy sign-up sheet for volunteering with the preparation of youth meals for this semester. Only two people have signed up so far. We could really use some help, especially from parents whom we haven’t seen in a while. Please consider getting involved in this manner, sign up is easy! Stuff You Should Know!

Musicians Needed for Valentine’s Day Dinner on Feb. 12!

It’s taken us quite a while, but Roxology at DCPC is slowly getting back on track! Next weekend, we’ll introduce Spencer Ayscue as our new Davidson College intern for Middle School Youth. Spencer’s got a brilliant mind and a great heart for serving youth. He’s also got some incredible musical talents as a singer for the Davidson Generals and a guitar/mandolin player for Westminster Fellowship.

We’re hoping to get some of our musicians in DCPC Youth to play at the Valentine’s Day Dinner for the Pines residents on February 12. If you’ve got a heart for singing or playing an instrument, shoot me an email at ascales@dcpc.org. We’ll set up a time for you all to practice with Spencer and me. Guitarist, vocals, keyboard, flute, violin, cello, drums: you name it, we want it!  Let us know by Sunday, February 5, if you can play with us.

What have DCPC Youth been up to?

Baby Jesus Birthday Shower!

What better way to close out the Advent season than by throwing a baby shower for the Baby Jesus? Youth came together to donate baby clothes and goods for families in need. We shared a huge pizza dinner, played a bunch of new games, enjoyed one another's company, and discussed what it means when we say Jesus is Immanuel, "God with us."  It was so much fun, we just might do it next year!

DCPC's "White Gift" Christmas Service:

On December 11, our high school youth swapped their sneakers for sandals, and their winter coats for shepherds cloaks for the annual Nativity play known at DCPC as the "White Gift" Service. Angels sang from the heavens, Mary and Joseph made it to the manger, and little baby Elijah Pryor made his debut as the newborn Jesus. Members of the congregation swarmed the Nativity scene, bringing hundreds of canned and dry goods to give to the Ada Jenkins Center for families in need. What a great way to celebrate Christ's birth!

CROP Walk:

On October 16, almost fifty youth and adult mentors walked four miles through downtown Charlotte as part of the largest CROP Walk in the country. As of October 20, we have raised $3,541 of our $5,000 goal! Congratulations to all of you who helped plan and participate in efforts to alleviate hunger in our community and around the world.

Youth CROP Walk 2011

Ethiopian Dinner and a “Meal with Jesus”:

On October 9, the High School youth headed down to Charlotte for fellowship and a delicious Ethiopian buffet at Meskerem! Many of us went up for second and third helpings as we tried their unique spongy bread, lentil dishes, and lamb stew.

The Middle School youth were in for a treat when they came to the Congregation House! Betsy Verhey whipped up a true feast of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean delicacies. As youth sat on rugs around large platters of hummus, seasoned chicken, and date desserts, they learned what it might have been like to have eaten a meal with Jesus over twenty centuries ago. We asked ourselves questions about who might have been invited at Jesus’ table, when they would have been excluded otherwise. When people share a meal with Jesus—either in ancient times or today—we know that everyone is welcome!
