Confirmation
Confirmation is a time for young people to affirm what they believe and take an active role in the life of the church. It is a strengthening of the promises made at baptism. For those not baptized as children, confirmation includes both baptism and a profession of faith.
As a Matthew 25 congregation, we believe confirmation indicates the church's reaffirmation of the confirmands' identity as God's beloved and their vocation as co-creators of good in the world. Each young person fully belongs in our church family, regardless of their membership or baptism status.
Confirmation is an opportunity for young people (traditionally 8th graders) to reflect further on their faith and embrace a life of discipleship. As the Book of Order says, "When those who have been baptized as children are ready to make a public profession of faith and accept the responsibility of life in the church (sometimes called 'confirmation'), the session shall provide an opportunity for them to do so."
Because of this, we do not require a written faith statement as a part of confirmation. While a written faith statement is still an option for professing their faith, part of our confirmation process will be discerning how each confirmand best uses their gifts to spread God's love throughout their everyday life. Whether that is through serving different ministry areas within the church, articulating their faith in a public declaration to the session, or initiating a different service project outside of the church, we will walk alongside the confirmands as they explore what professing their faith means for their lives as disciples of Christ.
Confirmation is concluded with Confirmation Sunday, where confirmands stand before the congregation and "officially" join the church as active members. This is a symbol of their commitment to living a life of active faith and being Christ's disciple. If a confirmand completes confirmation and does not wish to join as a member on Confirmation Sunday, they are still absolutely a part of our Youth Ministry program and larger faith family. Again, each young person fully belongs in our church family, regardless of their membership or baptism status.
All youth 8th grade and older are welcome to join us for Confirmation.
